Nursing and diversity

Throughout this semester I have learned the importance of patient respect and becoming open to many cultures. I found this to very interesting for me because I have always been interested in other countries, cultures and practices. However, I now see the true importance to acquire such knowledge on diversity because when we start our practice next semester we are all going to be dealing with a variety of people. As student nurses we must start to adapt to these changes and provide equal care to all of our patients and treat them with the respect they deserve.

What I want to do in the future

When I become a nurse I wish to work in a variety of settings and definitely travel to different parts of the world. However, I would first like to work in downtown Toronto because I have visited various hospitals in that area and would like to visit these hospitals again. After I get some experience I would like to go to a third world country and provide care for those who are truly in need. I do not have a preference as to the country I would like to just go to, just any third world country. Lastly, I would like to continue my nursing experience and retire at a hospital in England. I have always loved the health care system in Europe and would love to be a part of that one in the future.

Why Nursing?

When I was younger I was never interested in becoming a nurse. I did not like the idea that nurses had to do everything for the patient and on top of that having to work twelve hour shifts. However, as I grew up and had to go to hospitals for various reasons; I was able to recognize the important need for nurses. I loved the idea that nurses had such an intimate and personal relationship with the patient. I also liked how they made a difference in their patients’ lives just by doing their job. From that point on I knew that I wanted to be involved in nursing because I wanted to have an impact on others lives just like nurses had impacted my life.

Technology and Health Care

I believe that technology is defiantly a benefit towards overcoming communication barriers in health care. Technology is very efficient for people who are in different areas and would like to exchange thoughts and ideas with other health care workers. Such forms of communication can be accomplished through the use of blogs, online chat rooms, and databases. Another major communication barrier in health care is the language barrier. Through the use of technology health care workers can now translate their work into a variety of languages through the utilization of internet based sources. This is very beneficial because new information and/or procedures can be delivered to people worldwide. Therefore, technology aids everyone in overcoming communication barriers in health care.

Getting to know me!

Hello blog readers,

My name is Natasha and I am currently a first year student to the BScN program at UOIT. So far, I am enjoying the program because it has a practical aspect, which personally, is more enjoyable than reading a textbook all day.

When I was first introduced to blogging I thought it was nothing special. However, once I became more informed of how blogs work I became immediately interested because it is such an efficient way to broadcast ideas, opinions, or information that anyone can access. I also love how you can make your website unique by organizing and designing your website to best reflect your personality. I hope that I will continue to use this tool in the future.
